HOWARD M. HENDERSHOT, 99 ROCKFORD - Howard M. Hendershot, 99, died on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, in P.A. Peterson. He was born October 7, 1914, in Minerva Township, Marshall Cty., Iowa, son of Lawrence and Elva (Bramhall) Hendershot. After his father died when he was 13, he went to live with his aunt Zettie, and David Mikles, Apponoose County, Iowa, on their farm. He graduated top of his class, Cincinnati, Iowa. He met Deloris M. Hollenbeck at Cincinnati High School and they were married June 24, 1934, in Exline, Iowa, and were married for 67 years until her death on April 15, 2001. After graduation, Howard taught country school, grades 1-8 for two years in Apponoose County, Iowa. Moved to Rockford in 1936, and went to work at Elco Industries in the punch press department. He later transferred to the header department and worked his way up to manager of the small header department. He retired in 1978, after 42 years of service. Member of New Milford Methodist Church and Union Grange #811 for 50 plus years. After retiring, he operated a small engine repair business until early 2000's. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and do-it-yourself projects. Survivors include his son, Robert Hendershot, Rockford; grandchildren, Steven (Laura) Hendershot, Rockford, Vickie (Ray) Queckborner, Milledgeville, Erik (Courtney) Hendershot, Rockford, Kara Hendershot, Rockford; great-grandson, Randy Queckborner; daughter-in-law, Mary (Anderson) Hendershot. Predeceased by parents; wife, Deloris; brother, Wayne Hendershot; sister, Viola (Hendershot) Justis; son, Lawrence Hendershot; daughter-in-law, Nanette Hendershot; and his faithful dog, Babe. The family extends their sincere appreciation and thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, P.A. Peterson and Northern Illinois Hospice. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2014, with a visitation from 10 a.m. until service in Honquest Family Funeral Home with Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 4311 N. Mulford Road, Loves Park. Pastor Donald LaValle will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army Rockford Temple or Northern Illinois Hospice.
