ROBERT D. GILLESPIE, 73 ROCKFORD - Robert D. Gillespie, 73, of Rockford passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Robert D. was born at home on the Lowden Estate in the valley of the Rock River on August 17, 1940, to Forrest and Louise (Wiltfang) Gillespie. After graduating from Clinton High School (WI), he served in the US Army in Germany as a tank mechanic and continued his mechanical career with Chrysler in Belvedere, IL. He enjoyed 41 years of marriage to Margaret (Lyford) Gillespie and loved spending time with his family and friends. After 36 years of service at Chrysler, he retired in 2001, and enjoyed concerts, cinema, dining, and travel in the decade that followed. Robert D. died at home down by the river. He will be greatly missed by his wife; sons, Dr. Thomas Gillespie of Atlanta, GA and Douglas Gillespie of Rockford; sisters, Vera Edmonds of Rockford and Frances Bruns of Rochelle, IL; brother, F. LaVern Gillespie of New Glarus, WI; and countless friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roger and Ronald Gillespie; and sister, Mary Gillespie. Funeral service 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park; Pastor Bobby Sheets officiating. Visitation 9 a.m. to time of service.
