MARIAN HELEN CRAWFORD, 96 ROCKFORD - Marian Helen Crawford, 96, Rockford, died at 6:20 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2014, in OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. Marian lived on her own until a few months ago. She was a strong, independent woman and proud of it. She had a feisty external attitude but inside, she was a warm and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved being around family, especially her great-grandchildren. She was born June 17, 1918, in Rock County, Wis., the daughter of John A. and Jennie (Forsberg) Soderberg, and graduated from Janesville, Wis., High School, in 1936. Thirty years later, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Marian was a first grade teacher in Rockford Public Schools, retiring in 1984. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, where she participated in the Altar Guild, choir, Mary Martha Circle, and WELCA. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Beloit and was a member of PEO Chapter LU. She married Kenneth Zimmerman in Beloit in 1939. On Dec. 22, 1966, she married George E. Crawford in Rockford. He died on May 27, 1970. Marian is survived by her children, Gerald Zimmerman of San Jose, Calif., and Jean E. (Robert) Beranek of Rockford; granddaughters, Sarah Zimmerman of Austin, Texas, Krista Zimmerman of Los Gatos, Calif., Jennie (Chad) Dreher of Poplar Grove, and Lindsay (Uriel) Beranek-Nikolai of Rockford; stepchildren, Ellen (John) Lohse of Hampton, Ill., and Robert Crawford of Rockford; great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Dreher, Austin and Dylan Beranek, Alexander Beranek-Dauenbaugh, and Maddox Nikolai; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2014, in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 4700 Augustana Dr., with Rev. Kenneth R. Storck officiating. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2014, in Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd., Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday prior to the service in the church. Memorials may be made to Motherhouse Crisis Nursery, 1603 S. Fourth St., Rockford, IL 61104.
