Uriel Nikolai Obituary
URIEL NIKOLAI, 31 ROCKFORD - Uriel Nikolai, 31, a native of Peru who moved to Rockford when he was 5, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014. Uriel was fun-loving, and when with friends, usually the life of the party. He loved nicknames. At home, he was "Papa Weasel" and his son, Maddox, and step-son, Alex, were "baby weasels." His wife, Lindsay, was "Baby Roo," his sister, Marilin "Mariposa" and her children the "little weasels." Uriel was born in Cusco, Peru on Feb. 23, 1983, the fifth of six children in his birth family. His father died in 1988. He and his sister were adopted by Geri Nikolai of Rockford. He attended Bloom Elementary, Eisenhower Middle and Guilford High schools. He was one credit from an associate's degree from Rock Valley College. He loved pets, and his collection included piranhas, ferrets, and a chicken hatched in his fourth-grade classroom. His deepest animal love was his bluenose pit bull, Scar, who is a gentle guardian of little Maddox. Uriel worked in telephone sales and marketing. He was successful at several firms, earning bonuses and Caribbean trip. On a warm St. Patrick's Day in 2012, he married his long-time friend, Lindsay Beranek, outside of Nicholas Conservatory. He took Lindsay's son, Alex, as his own. In November that year, they welcomed Baby Maddox. Uriel earned the unofficial record for diaper-changing, making sure Maddox was clean and dry whenever needed, even in the middle of the night. He loved and protected "his boys," asking Lindsay whenever they were going someplace as a family, "Will the boys have fun?" Uriel will be deeply missed by his wife, Lindsay; his boys, Alex, 5, and Maddox, 1; his mother, Geri Nikolai; his sister, Marilin Nikolai (Helsum Cook); nieces, Arianna and Ysa; and nephew, Tito. He also is survived by his birth family in Peru; many aunts, uncles and cousins here; and a large circle of friends. He was predeceased by his best friend, Tim Strahorn. To Tim, and all his friends, we know Uriel would like to say, "Meit, Meit." A celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Christenson Funeral Home & Crematory, 925 Third Ave., with visitation from 10 a.m. until time of service. Family friend, Webbs Norman will conduct the service. Cremation rites will then be accorded. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Aug. 22, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
