ELSIE F. STOKES, 84 ROCKFORD - Elsie F. Stokes, 84, of Rockford passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at River Bluff Nursing Home, with her family by her side. Elsie was born November 10, 1929, in Pocahontas, AR, the daughter of William Thomas and Dollie E. Davis Poe. Elsie married Carl Thomas on August 27, 1947; Carl preceded her in death on December 3, 2003. Elsie was a longtime member of Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ, where she was the pianist and head of the church Peanut Brittle Group. Elsie loved to crochet and was considered the "caretaker" of the family. Elsie is survived by her daughters, Gloria (Charles) Stanphill and Diane (Jim) Batchelor; four grandchildren, Brian Stanphill, Paul Stanphill, Lindsey (Brent) Spychalski and Lorinda (Matt) Green; three great-grandchildren, Caden Spychalski, Chloe Spychalski and Amelia Green; two brothers, Bill (Jewel) Poe and Wes (Glenda) Poe; two sisters, Nova (Norman) Decker and Mary Sue (Lester) Sawyer. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Dollie; husband, Carl; and brother, Lavelle Poe. A service to celebrate Elsie's life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 30, 2014, at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road in Machesney Park, with Pastor Wesley Poe and Rev. Norman Decker officiating. Visitation for Elsie will be from 1 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be sent to the family at sunsetfhmemgardens.com.
