Thomas Matuszewski Obituary

THOMAS R. MATUSZEWSKI, 90 ROCKFORD - Thomas R. Matus-zewski, 90, of Rock-ford, passed away at 4:15 p.m. Sunday April 20, 2008, in his home. He was born Dec. 20, 1917, in Pittsburgh, son of Apolonia and Frank Matuszewski. He lived in Rockford for most of his life. He married Jennie Laskowski on June 26, 1943, in St Stanislaus Church. He worked at Joseph Behr and retired from Greenlee Brothers after 42 years. Veteran of World War II in the 39th regiment 9th infantry division. He fought in the battles of Hurtgen Forest, Battle of the Bulge and crossed the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine at Remagen before it collapsed. Member of St. Stanislaus Church and White Eagle Club. He was an avid sportsman and athlete. He was rated the best shortstop in this area in the 30s, playing shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals farm team in 1936. He also played for the Rockford Industrial League, PNA and in the Army in Aichach, Germany. He enjoyed bowling and playing in ABC tournaments. He loved golf, placing in several city tournaments and played until he was 89. Survivors include wife, Jennie; children, Thomasetta (Norman) Chilton of Davis, Lawrence, Gerald and Mary Ann (Michael) Hughes of Rockford; grandchildren, Melinda and Eric Chilton; sisters, Regina Harezlak and Edna Stone, both of Rockford; numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents and brother, Wallace. Special thank- you to the nurses and staff of Heartland Hospice. You were his angels. Service at 11 a.m. Thursday April 24, in St Stanislaus Church, with visitation from 10 a.m. to time of service; Father Peter Sarniki will officiate. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. My deepest sympathy to you for your loss. Growing up on Arizona Ave across the street from the Matuszewski family was a great source of lifes adventures and hundreds of hours of baseball fun with Larry and Gerry. Great memories. Gods Peace to you all.
