REV. JOHN A. HANRAHAN, 74
ROCKFORD - The Rev. John A. Hanrahan, 74, of Rockford died at 2:22 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 2010, in Rockford Memorial Hospital. Born July 25, 1935, in Somerville, Mass.; the son of John and Florence (MacKinnon) Hanrahan. He attended Catholic grammar school and then Boston College High School from 1949 to 1953. He received his classical education from Fordham University, New York, and Springhill College, Mo-bile, Ala., from 1956 to 1958, and his philosophical education there from 1958 to 1960. Father Hanrahan was a member of the Society of Jesus, New England Province, and received his theological training at Weston College from 1963 to 1967. He was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood by Richard Cardinal Cushing at Weston College on June 11, 1966. Father Hanrahan completed his Tertianship in 1968 and then served the church as a teacher in the schools sponsored by the Society of Jesus. During this time he completed successfully advanced degrees in philosophy and chemistry. With the permission of his Religious Superior, Father Hanrahan received exclaustration from the Society of Jesus and was given a pastoral assignment by The Most Reverend Thomas G. Doran, Bishop of Rockford, to be the Parochial Vicar for Holy Family Parish, where he served faithfully from Dec. 1, 1996 to Oct. 6, 2000. Father Hanrahan was incardinated as a priest of the Diocese of Rockford on Nov. 29, 1998. He was named the pastor of St. Mary Parish, Polo, on Oct. 6, 2000, and he served there until July 1, 2009, when he received permission to retire. In his retirement and until only recently, Father Hanrahan provided clergy assistance to several parishes in the Diocese of Rockford. Survived by brother, Robert P. (Nancy) Hanrahan of South Hadley, Mass.; and nieces and nephews, Mary Snider, Susan Hanrahan and Bobby Hanrahan. Predeceased by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Monday, June 21, in Cathedral of St. Peter, 1243 N. Church St., with visitation from 9 to 10:45 a.m.; The Most Rev. Thomas G.
