Anthony 'Tony' Castrogiovanni, 89 Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather and Brother ROCKFORD - Anthony "Tony" Castrogiovanni, 89, died Saturday, July 17, 2010, at his home in the presence of his loving family in Rockford. Born Aug. 26, 1920, the oldest son of Joseph and Rose (Buscemi) Castrogiovanni. From their beginning at the Sanitary Meat Market on South Main Street, Tony, his father, uncle and three brothers built Hilander Foods into a regional institution that they operated for nearly 80 years. Tony took a leave of absence from the business during World War II to serve in the Coast Guard. On his return, he married Fran Dodaro, and with their three daughters, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 17, 2010. While family and work were his top priorities, he found time to earn his pilot's license, and on Sunday mornings he could be seen at the controls of a Cessna 172. He traveled most to his beloved Italy and read extensively. He could complete the best history lesson with a keen observation captured in an appropriate quote. He was a gracious, generous host who was always happy to pick up the dinner tab. He would respond to a thank-you with "thank the good Lord." Today, his family and friends thank the Lord for Tony Castrogiovanni. He is survived by his wife, Frances (Dodaro) Castrogiovanni; daughters, Roz Hill, Carla (John) Cox and Fran (Jim) Knutson; grandchildren, Tony (Rebecca) Hill, Jeff (Jennifer) Hill, Carrie Cox, Chris Cox, Marifran (Greg) Georgis and Julie Knutson (Tyler) Rudick; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, John (June) and Joe (Sharyn) Castrogiovanni; sister-in-law, Mary Castrogiovanni; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; son-in-law, Stephen Hill; and brother, Al Castrogiovanni. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. David E. Beauvais at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, in Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Road, with visitation from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Burial in St. Mary/St. James Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Midwest Heart Specialists, VNA Hospice and all the caregivers who helped out in this trying time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boylan Catholic High School (the Anthony and Frances (Dodaro) Castrogiovanni and Family Scholarship), 4000 St. Frances Drive, Rockford, IL 61103; or the Poor Clare Corpus Christi Monastery, 2111 S. Main St., Rockford, IL 61102. Arrangements by Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Road. Express condolences and share memories at www.fitzgerald
