DONALD EDWARD SAUNDERS, 78 WARREN - Donald Edward Saunders, 78, of Warren died Wednesday, July 28, 2010, in University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, Wis. Born Feb. 26, 1932, in Lafayette County, Wis., to Francis (Luke) and Berneice (Hall) Saunders. Graduated from Warren (Ill.) High School in 1950. On Oct. 6, 1956, he married Charlene Goebel at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington, Wis., Monsignor Bernard Doyle officiated. Served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956 during the Korean War. Employed at Warren Auto Co., Warren, from 1956 to 1965, as a mechanic, car salesman and parts manager. He then went into business for himself as a DX agent and then a petroleum marketer. He and his wife started Saunders Oil Co. in 1965 and today have expanded the business to include five convenience stores throughout southwest Wisconsin and northwest Illinois. Donald was one of the founders of the Warren Chamber of Commerce. Member of the American Legion Post 464 and served as legion commander from 1981 to 1983. Member of the Warren Fire Department from 1962 to 1973, and member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Warren, where he served on the finance committee. Donald was awarded the 2010 William R. Deutsch Bucketeer Award, from the Illinois Marketers Petroleum Association, for 50 years of service in the petroleum business. Donald loved traveling in their motor coach, driving their Mustang, having their home in the Christmas Walk, working in the plant and flower gardens, watching the birds, and spending time with family and friends. Surviving are wife, Charlene of Warren; children, Steven (A' Lisa) Saunders of Machesney Park/Fort Myers, Fla., Marcia (Jim) Gray of Stoughton, Wis., and Brian (Karlene) Saunders of Warren; grandchildren, Tanya Payne of Stoughton, Wis., Shawn (Kim) Saunders and Luke (Tiffany) Saunders of Warren, Shane (Jen) Saunders of Machesney Park, Jeremy Saunders and Brianna Saunders of Warren and Keegan Kent of Winslow; great-grandchildren, Xavier and Alex Phillips, Tristan and Taya Payne, Tyler, Brayden, Carsyn, Abby, Fiona and Alexa Saunders, and the eleventh great-grandchild due in November; sister, Kathryn (Ray) Reed of Warren; brother, Bernard (Barb) Saunders of Warren; sisters-in-law, Bernadine McGrath of Monroe, Wis., Rose (Donald) Lawler of Madison, Wis., and Eleanor (Vernon) Gille of Gratiot, Wis.; brothers-in-law, Bob Judkins of Loganville, Wis., and Karl Goebel of Browntown, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by parents; very special grandmother, Elsie K. Hall; father and mother-in-law, Edward and Geneva Goebel; sisters-in-law, Helene, Iva, Betty, Barb and Donna Goebel, Marguerite Sperry and Ruth Judkins; brothers-in-law, Raymond, Joseph and Robert Goebel, Verdel McGrath and Gaylord Sperry. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Natalie Callander, Dr. James Cleary, Kristin Welhouse, Katie Akre, Tammie Ali and Maureen Gordon, all of University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics in Madison, and Dr. Martin Cleary, Michelle Wurster, nurses and staff of Freeport Health Network. Also thanks to UW doctors, nurses, lab technicians and staff in the Paul P. Carbone Center, ER, Cardiac ICU, Palliative Care, and staff in Valet and Chaplin Services.
