MARK C. PETERSON, 81 ROCKFORD - Mark C. Peterson, 81, of Rockford died Friday, Feb. 15, 2013. Born July 16, 1931, in Kirkland, he was the middle son of the late Elmer and Alice (Carlson) Peterson. He graduated from Kirkland High School and The University of Illinois in mechanical engineering and was a professional engineer in Illinois and Texas. Mark served in the U.S. Army Military Police during the Korean War in Tokyo, Japan. He met his beautiful bride, Shirley Lyons, in January 1953, and proposed Nov. 19, 1953, a day before he had to leave to serve his country. They were married Jan. 15, 1955, in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Belvidere. He began his long career as an engineer at Structo Toys, True-Line Engineering, and then Ipsen Industries before going off on his own and starting Peterson Engineering, later purchasing BeaverMatic, Inc. in 1986 with his sons. Member of American Society of Metals (ASM). Before the innovation of CAD, Mark had the reputation as "One of the Best draftsmen in Northern Illinois". He loved spending time with his family, fishing, traveling and reminiscing with them of his farming days. He was very proud of his Swedish heritage often sharing recipes and stories with others. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley; children, Kary (Kathy) Peterson and Kevin (Paula) Peterson, both of Rockford, and Karol (Steve) Gray of Port Angeles, Wash.; grandchildren, Matt, Molly and Kyle Peterson, and Haley Gray; brother, Karl Peterson; sisters, Myrna Henry and Marilyn (Arlyn) Groen; brother-in-law, Dale (Judy) Lyons; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronald Peterson; sister-in-law, Ruthie Peterson; and brother-in-law, Dale Henry. Memorial service at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the chapel of Cremation Society of Illinois, 6825 Weaver Road, Rockford, IL 61114, with visitation from 4 p.m. to time of service. Pastor Eugene Willie will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family for distributions to Mark's favorite charities.
