JOHN WAYNE COX SR., 88 GALENA - John Wayne Cox Sr., 88, of Galena, a decorated World War II veteran passed away peacefully March 8, 2013, surrounded by his family. John was born on April 24, 1924, in Hazel Green, Wis., the only son of six children born to Dale and Anne Cox. John was married for 63 years to his loving wife, Anna, who preceded him in death. John loved to take the dance floor with his wife, Anna, showing onlookers just how the "jig" was done. He loved going for quiet rides over country roads with Anna, listening to the Chicago Cubs, and going fishing (summer AND winter). But he always said the best times were just being at home with his wife and children, who will sorely miss his caring manner, quick wit and sarcastic sense of humor. He was the proud and loving father of eight children, John, Jr. (Bonnie), Jim (Pauline), Pat, Paula (Jordan), Doris, Dave (Sherri), Lori (John), and Lynda (Brian); the caring grandfather of Jennifer, Emily (John), Michael (Ana), Jessica (Tim), Jennison, Todd (Erika), Corey, Carissa, Matthew, Justin, Jared, Jennifer (Mark), Eric (Becky), Adam, Katie (Nate), Kelsey, Kendall, Joshua, Rachel, Megan, and Jake; and great-grandfather to Julia, Daniel, Johno, Audrey, Kaleb, Samantha, Nicole, Jordyn, Nicholas, Max, Annabelle, and Benjamin. Three sisters, Doris, Carol Anne, and Kathy survive him. The family would also like to thank the staff at Bell Tower in East Dubuque, who embraced John during his stay there, the doctors and staff at Mercy Hospital, Hospice of Dubuque and the staff at the Galena-Stauss Nursing Home. Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 14, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Galena. Burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in John's honor to St. Jude Hospital, The Alzheimer Foundation, or to a .
