WILLIAM H. GRIDLEY, 90 HUSBAND, FATHER, GRANDFATHER, GREAT-GRANDFATHER, BROTHER, UNCLE AND FRIEND ROCKFORD - William "Bill" H. Gridley, 90, of Rockford, IL, also of Winnebago, IL, passed away peacefully March 28, 2013, at Rockford Memorial Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family. Born Oct. 5, 1922, in Rockford, the son of Everett and Mary Cole Gridley. Bill graduated from Rockford West High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. On Oct. 24, 1943, he married Leona Johnson in Astoria, Oregon. This year they will be celebrating their 70th anniversary together. He retired in 1985 after 30 years with the United States Postal Service. He was an avid reader, especially if the subject was President Abraham Lincoln or the Civil War. He loved to fish, garden, and collect coins and cars. Bill was an avid sports fan following the Bears, Cubs and Bulls. Bill was a longtime member of Court Street United Methodist Church where he was baptized. Survived by his daughters, Randee Dalzell, Susan Stralow, Paulette (Dan) McKirgan and Lisa (Tim) Farrell; grandchildren, Karen (Andy) Drummond, John Nichole) Dalzell, Stephanie (Craig) Garwick, Matthew (Dianna) Stralow, Amanda (Scott) Hayes, Stacey Farrell, Jessica (Nick Crusen) Farrell and Tiina (Jani) Holmberg, Helsinki, Finland; great-grandchildren, Ashley Garwick, Faith and Zach Dalzell, May Drummond, Chase and Brooklyn Farrell, Ava and Ella Hayes, Saara and Eero Holmberg; brother, James (Phyllis) Gridley of Rockford; sisters, Joanne Rice of Loves Park and Barbara Carlson of Salt Lake City, UT; sisters-in-law, Helen Gridley of Rockford, Dorothy Gridley of Dousman, WI; and numerous other family and friends. Predeceased by wife, Leona; son, William; parents; three brothers, Richard, Everett, Robert; and one sister, Marge Fulton. The family would like to thank Rev. Calvin Culpepper of Court Street UMC, Dr. Craig Rogers, the nurses and staff of Rockford Memorial Hospital A-3, the ground floor nurses, staff and Physical Therapy at P.A. Peterson for the care they gave him. Bill's decision to donate his body for scientific research will allow his spirit to live on. According to Bill's wishes, private burial with immediate family will be held at a later date.
