Philip Arnold Bleakney Jr., 73, adored husband, father, and grandfather entered the Lord's Kingdom on January 1, 2014. He was born in 1940 in the Rio Grande Valley to Dr. Phil and Mary Bleakney.

He fought a valiant and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis and cancer. No one showed more courage and fought his battle with such dignity. He was surrounded by his loving family who loved and adored him when he passed into the hands of the Lord. His wife and family will miss him for the rest of our lives. He inspired so many people by his courage and his strength during his worst hours.
He attended schools in Harlingen and San Benito and graduated from Texas Military Institute, San Antonio Texas. While in high school Phil excelled in tennis winning the Boys Doubles National Tennis Championship and was a member on the Junior Davis Cup team. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a business degree in 1962. Phil completed post graduate studies in banking at SMU.
After graduation he started his banking career in Snyder and later moved to Corpus Christi and Austin. In 1971 he moved back to the valley taking a position at First National Bank of McAllen later becoming Vice President. In 1975 Phil married the love of his life, Sandra Smith, of San Antonio and they have lived in McAllen for 38 years. Phil eventually retired as Vice President but remained active in the banking community. In 1987 he went on to purchase City National Bank of Weslaco. He also served as a board member and consultant for many years to Inter National Bank of McAllen. Phil served on several community boards including serving as president of McAllen Country Club.
Phil's loves and hobbies included golf, cars, antique guns and loved playing his guitar. Phil and Sandra loved collecting antique furniture, clocks and art. In later years they loved riding their Harley Davidson around their home and mountains in Ruidoso, New Mexico.
Phil is survived by his adoring and caring wife Sandra; his daughters Bonnie Bleakney Albert, Tracy Bleakney Bissett; son, Philip Arnold Bleakney III; sisters Millicent Bleakney Mason and Susan Bleakney Baker. Grandchildren Jacob and Abby Gray; Britton and Bleakney Bissett; and Allison and Mary Margret Bleakney and numerous nieces and nephews.
Phil's pallbearers will be Dr. Jack Bissett, Merland Albert, Philip Bleakney III, Jacob Gray, Britton Bissett, Penny Baker Jr, Blake Baker, John Ray III, and David Schorlemer. The honorary pallbearers will be Penny Baker, Ron Kilby, Bob Hawkins, Gary Gurwitz, Greg Morrow, Alter Holland, Henry Haris, Robert Smith, Jerry Greenfield, Gary Wolff, Bill Kennedy Ernie Williams, Tommy Bryson, Howard Mason and Bill Hayter.
The family suggest the friends make memorial contributions to The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (230 East Ohio Street, Suite 304, Chicago, IL 60611) or the

A visitation will be held Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Kreidler Funeral Home from 4-6 PM. Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 6, 2014, 11AM at St. John's Episcopal Church with burial to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, TX. kreidlerfuneralhome.com
