Robert Edward Slaughter, 76, of Levelland, Texas and Ruidoso, NM passed away on March 22, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, his birthday, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Levelland, Texas with visitation being held Tuesday, March 25, 2014 from 6 pm to 8 pm at George Price Funeral Home. Services are under the direction of George Price Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held in Austin, Texas on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 10 am, at the Masonic Cemetery (Boggy Creek Cemetery) under the direction of Harrell Funeral Home.
Robert Slaughter was a Professor of English at South Plains College in Levelland from 1969-2003, serving as chairman of the Language Arts Department from 1969-1976 and 1979-1991.
Robert was born March 26, 1937, in Beaumont, Texas to LeGrande Mancel and Pearl Agnes (Spillmann) Slaughter.
Robert married Luanne Pillsbury Dawson, his wife of 42 years on July 10, 1971.
After graduating from high school in Houston, Texas Robert received his B.A. in German and English from the University of Texas in Austin in 1962. He also studied in Germany at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Freiburg. He received his MA in English from Sam Houston State University in Hunstville, Texas and did graduate work at Texas A&M, the University of Washington and Texas Tech University.
He taught German and English at Brazosport High School in Freeport, Texas from 1963-1968.
Robert is survived by his wife Luanne of Levelland and Ruidoso; sons LeGrande Mancel Slaughter III and wife Haekyung (Jeon) of Highland Village, Texas; and David Alan Slaughter and wife Kim (Marez) of Georgetown, Texas and grandchildren Ellie and Annabel of Highland Village.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and brother, LeGrande Mancel Slaughter, Jr.
Robert was known for his dry wit and loving nature beneath a seemingly gruff exterior. He was a brilliant and entertaining. He loved to travel, talk about literature and spend time entertaining family and friends with his humorous stories.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Interim Hospice of Levelland and Calvert Home Health Care of Leveland for their love and care in his last months and days.
