C. William DeMyer

NEW ASHFORD, Mass. - C. William "Duke" DeMyer, 85, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at his residence.

He was born July 12, 1928, in Pittsfield, Mass., the son of Richard Joseph and Hattie Bell DeMyer. The family moved shortly thereafter to Albany, N.Y., where he lived until he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1947. He served as a machine accountant in Washington, D.C., until 1950.

Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he moved to Massachusetts and settled in Berkshire County where he held various positions until he entered the Massachusetts State Police Academy in 1956. He was assigned to various barracks until his mandatory retirement at age 50 in 1978, at which time he had achieved the rank of Major.

After retiring from the state police, he accepted a position with Kay-Bee Toys, where he set up and directed a security department, then later set up a personnel department. By 1983, Kay-Bee Toys had grown to a nationwide corporation with more than 1,000 stores in 50 states and Puerto Rico, at which time he was promoted to vice president of personnel. In 1990, he retired from Kay-Bee Toy stores.

He was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers. Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

At his request, he will be cremated. A graveside service with military honors will be held Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the New Ashford Volunteer Fire Department or the Williamstown Ambulance Service through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
