DAVENPORT, Iowa - Gene E. Noble, 89, of Davenport, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society in Davenport, Iowa.
He was born January 16, 1924, in Flushing, N.Y., the son of Leroy Beaumont and Thelma (Appell) Noble. He graduated from Rutland (Vt.) High School in 1940. He then attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., beginning in 1941 but left Wesleyan in his sophomore year to volunteer for the newly formed 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army
. He returned to Wesleyan after the war and graduated in 1946.
He was united in marriage to June P. Haseltine, his high school sweetheart, on December 19, 1945.
After volunteering for the 10th Mountain Division, he spent three years in the service, training at Camp Hale in Colorado, as well as in Texas, before deploying to Italy. He achieved the rank of T/4 (Sgt.) and received the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star
Gene was co-owner, general manager and treasurer of the Rutland Daily Herald for more than 40 years until his retirement in 1986, during which time he oversaw the innovations of photo composition, offset printing and seven-days-per-week publication, as well as the acquisition of The Barre-Montpelier Times Argus. He sat on the board of directors for The Rutland Daily Herald, The Barre-Montpelier Times Argus, Rutland Country Club, Rutland Hospital, The Marble Bank (Rutland) and The New England Daily Newspaper Association. He was a member of the Rutland School Board, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club
, Rutland Country Club and Grace Congregational Church.
Upon retirement, he and his wife built a second home in Naples, Fla., and split their time between Naples and Rutland until June's death in 2003. In 2005, Gene moved to Davenport, Iowa, to be closer to his daughter. A highlight of his later years was visiting the WWII
Memorial on the Honor Flight. He enjoyed playing tennis, was an avid golfer, loved to read and solve New York Times crossword puzzles, and watch sports.
He is survived by his daughters, Lynne Gallipo of Phoenix, Ariz.; Kim Noble of Brattleboro, Vt.; and Kyle (Tim) Moe of Davenport, Iowa; grandchildren, J. Michael Gallipo of Rochester, N.H.; Courtney Gallipo of Phoenix, Ariz.; Dana Moe and Blake Moe, both of Davenport; and great-grandchildren, Jay Gallipo and Sean Gallipo, both of Dover, N.H. He was preceded in death by his wife, June; sister-in-law Janice Haseltine; cousin and his wife, Leonard and Ednah Appell; and his parents.
Gene's family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of the Good Samaritan Center for their skilled and compassionate care during his extended illness.

Per Gene's wishes, he will be cremated and buried in Rutland, Vt.
A memorial service will be held in the spring with the date to be determined.
