George M. Means III

George M. Means III, 65, died Jan. 25, 2013, at his home in Rutland.

He was born in Des Moines, Iowa, Aug. 18, 1947, son of George and Mildred (Martin) Means.

After serving in the Navy, George attended the University of Iowa where he obtained a bachelor's degree in accounting.

George had recently retired from A.M. Peisch in Rutland, where he was a partner in the firm.

George loved working downtown and was involved with the development of the Downtown Partnership, serving on their board of directors for many years. He served as treasurer on the boards of the Rutland Free Library and the RRMC Auxiliary. Earlier in his career, he served as the chair of the Vermont Society of Certified Public Accountants.

He was a longtime member of Rutland City Rotary and the Rutland Country Club.

George had a fierce, intellectual curiosity. He was an avid reader and loved the challenge of completing the daily New York Times crossword puzzle. He loved all genres of music and attended events at the Paramount Theatre on a regular basis. He loved to play golf.

George will be missed at the downtown establishments he frequented and the Rutland Country Club. He truly was a "man about town."

He will be missed for his wit, his positive spirit and his incredible generosity.

Surviving are his two sons, Daniel Means of Washington, D.C., and Kevin Means of Keene, N.H.; a daughter, Kathryn Means of Rutland; a sister and brother-in-law, Julie and Gregg Buchanan of Algona, Iowa, and their children, Meredith and Geoff.

A celebration of life will be held at Rutland Country Club at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Paramount Theatre, care of Clifford Funeral Home, 2 Washington St., Rutland, VT 05701.
