Harold R. Barrett

BRIDPORT - Harold Russell Barrett, 71, died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at his home in Bridport after a battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 27, 1940, in Sharon, Conn., the son of Russell and Hazel (Doane) Barrett.

He worked as a mechanic for a number of automotive dealerships in Massachusetts through the '60s and early '70s, and when he returned to Vermont in 1975, he started working for Champlain Valley Equipment in Middlebury. He also owned and operated his own custom farm service business for several years. After selling his business, he worked for local farmers until he retired in 2003.

He was a member of the Addison County Eagles, The Loyal Order of Moose in Zephyrhills, Fla., Otter Valley Sams and the Green Mountain Chapter of FMCA.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Janet (Briggs) Barrett; two sons, Mark of Barstow, Calif., and Harold Paul of Bridport; a daughter Susan, also of Bridport; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Howard Barrett and Leonard Barrett of Bridport; three sisters, Joyce Paquette of New Haven, Rita Geno of Rutland, and Harriet Murray of Burlington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Pauline Bryant.

Per his request,there will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice in New Haven.
