BENNINGTON - John Joseph Grady, 79, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.
He was born in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y., the son of John Patrick and Helen (Thayer) Grady, and shortly after the family moved to the Bennington area.
He attended North Bennington schools and graduated in 1952.
He served with the Bennington National Guard, and attended military school in Texas, with the rank of master sergeant.
He worked for Sprague Electric in Williamstown, Mass., as an electrical technician. There he met Theresa Morin, and they were married Feb. 6, 1960, in North Adams, Mass. He also worked for Sprague Electric in Nashua, N.H. He then took a job with AVX Ceramics, and the family moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
He was very involved as an instructor in the Junior Achievement Program in Myrtle Beach. He left AVX Ceramics, and returned to North Bennington, accepting a position as a purchasing agent with William E. Dailey, Inc. in Shaftsbury. At the time of his retirement, he was working at the Scale House.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was a New York Yankees fan.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa Grady; two daughters, Jean Henderson of Bennington, and Joanne Lomena of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three brothers, Thomas Grady of Washington state, Michael Grady of Hollis, N.H., and William Grady of Romona, Calif.; a sister, Mary Smith of Florida, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A prayer service will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington, Monday, Oct. 28, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Death and Burial at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Southview Cemetery in North Adams, Mass.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday, Oct. 27, from 3 to 5 p.m.
