BRANDON - Robert "Bob" Bruce, age 73, died Saturday, November 9, 2013, at his home in Brandon.
Bob was born in Rutland on October 31, 1940. He was the son of Kenneth and Zila (Buckey) Bruce.
He grew up in Brandon and received his early education at the Arnold District graded school. He attended Brandon High School and later earned his GED.
He served in the United States Marine Corps
Reserve and the Vermont Army National Guard, from 1958 until 1964.
He worked as a masonry apprentice under his father for several years, and later became a self-employed carpenter. He and his partner, Dick Wood, formed Bruce & Wood Construction, and together operated it for many years.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, woodworking, horseshoes, and cooking, and later in life, made ballpoint pens out of exotic woods and antlers.
He was a charter member of the Brandon Area Rescue Squad, serving for five years. He belonged to Brandon American Legion Post #55.
Surviving is his wife, Margy Bruce of Brandon, whom he married in Brandon on August 27, 1983; his daughter, Michele Burke of Buffalo, NY; two sisters, Virginia Bruce of North Carolina, and Linda Osuchowski of Queensbury, NY; and two grandchildren, Jason Weaver of Buffalo, NY, and Alexa Reilly of Albany, NY. Many nieces and nephews also survive him. He was predeceased by two daughters, Patricia Reilly in 1995, and Jayne Lynn Bruce in 2009; a sister, Mary Whoyt; and 10 brothers, Bill, Ed, Mickey, June, Bud, Donnie, Jerry, Wendell, Charlie, and Gene.
A gathering "In Celebration of Bob" will be held Sunday, November 17, 2013, at 12 Noon, at the Brandon American Legion Post #55. Family and friends are invited to share remembrances and join together in a feast of celebration.
The graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, will take place at a later date in Pine Hill Cemetery.
