Sheila Teahan Harter Comfort, formerly of Naples, Fla., and the Homer/Cortland, N.Y., area, passed away from ovarian cancer on August 3, 2011, at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Sheila was 72 years old.
Sheila was born March 16, 1939, to Beatrice and Earl Teahan. She graduated with honors from Homer Central High School Class of 1957. She married Laurence Comfort on June 7, 1958. She worked as a secretary for R.H. Miller and Monk's Express, a tax preparer for H&R Block, and finally as a claims examiner for the New York State Unemployment Division until her unexpected disability in 1982.
In 1982, at the age of 43, Sheila survived a horrific, hospital error that left her in a wheelchair and without her beautiful voice.
Sheila was predeceased by both her parents; her adoptive father, Henry Harter; and infant granddaughter, Ann Marie Comfort. Sheila's father was killed in an automobile accident when she was five days old.
Before her disability, Sheila was an avid bowler and was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame in 1983, an honor she shared with her mother. She was treasurer for the Bowling Association for several years. At one point, Sheila was also a Girl Scout leader.
Sheila enjoyed her time in Florida with her husband. Even though Sheila was robbed of her voice, she was still known to throw out witty zingers in a loud whisper. She enjoyed eating out with their several friends, playing bingo at Paradise Point and making a weekly visit to a local casino with her dear friend, Star.
Sheila is survived by her husband of 53 years, Laurence Comfort; three children, Rebecca Ruby of Alaska, Scott and Regina Comfort of Cortland, N.Y., and Scott and Vicki Shaddock of Fair Haven, Vt.; six grandchildren, Scott Comfort Jr., Kayla Comfort Grinnell, Sydni, Gable, Logan and Chloe Shaddock; two great-grandchildren, Hope and Michael.
Calling hours will be held at Barber's Funeral Home in Homer, N.Y., on Sunday, August 7, from 4-7 p.m. A graveside service will be in Virgil Cemetery on Monday, August 8, at 11:00. A celebration of Sheila's life will be held at the Homer Elks Club
