William Francis Berard

BENNINGTON - William Francis Berard, 84, a resident of Burgess Road in Bennington died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born Aug. 10, 1929, in Bennington and was the son of the late Ephrem and Marguerite (Roy) Berard. He received his education at Sacred Heart School and is a graduate of Bennington High School. Mr. Berard served in the U.S. Army.

On Feb. 26, 1949, he married the former Virginia ‘Ginny' Stratton. They have been married for 65 years.

He has been a member of the Bennington Moose Lodge #1233 for more than 50 years and has held all offices and is a Past Governor. He is a member of the American Legion Post #13 of Bennington.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading and doing puzzle books.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his sons, Steve Berard and his wife, Dawn, of St. Johnsbury; Bill Berard and his wife, Charleene, of Pownal; Michael Berard and his wife, Kim, of Bennington; daughters Jean Berard of Bennington; Susan and her husband, Roy Sanders, of Mississippi; Esther McGarvin of Bennington; Deborah Berard of Bennington; and Becky and her husband, Shawn Legacy, of Shaftsbury. He leaves 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, one nephew, one niece and many cousins.

He is predeceased by one daughter, Catherine; one son, Joseph; one sister, Bernadette; and two granddaughters.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington, with his grandson, the Rev. Damian J. Legacy officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery.
