Raymond Houghton Obituary

WALPOLE, N.H. - Raymond O. Houghton, 84, died Nov. 25, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his family, following a period of declining health.

He was born April 7, 1927, in Bellows Falls, Vt., the son of Henry E. and Gladys (Ploof) Houghton.

He was a 1947 graduate of Chester High School in Chester, Vt.

He worked in farming and for RN Johnson, Inc. until retirement.

He was a member and assistant chief of the Walpole Fire Department. He was co-founder of the Walpole Volunteer Ambulance Corp.

He served in the United States Army.

He was an avid woodworker.

On Oct. 25, 1953 in Brattleboro, Vt., he married Arlene C. Gallup, who survives him. He is also survived by two sons, Kenneth R. Houghton of Tavares, Fla., and Ross H. Houghton of Charlestown, N.H.; two daughters, Louise A. Clark of Newfane, Vt., and Raylene H. Sperling of Goldsboro, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Cook of Chester, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Carl Houghton; one sister Ruth Stearns; and a grandson, David Clark.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.

Burial will take place at the convenience of the family in Walpole.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Walpole Fire Department, PO Box 162, Walpole, NH 03608.

Mr. Houghton was so generous with his time and talents to help make wooden craft items for my preschoolers to paint. I remember when he would bring or pick up his grandchildren at preschool many years ago. Sending my condolences to his family. He was a wonderful man.
