WINDHAM, VT - Ellery George Giles, 89, passed away May 21, 2013, at Springfield Hospital.

He was born in Londonderry, VT March 9, 1924, the son of Loren and Fannie (McKellip) Giles. He attended high school in Chester and the Vermont (Agricultural) Technical College in Randolph. Mr. Giles was a Veteran of WWII having served with the United States Army. He was a rifleman in the 1st Ranger Battalion. He received the Purple Heart Award while serving in the European-African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign, having been wounded Nov. 12, 1943, in Venafro, Italy.

He was married to Betty Ayers in 1970.

Mr. Giles worked for the United States Postal Service and served as Postmaster for the town of Wardsboro.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Kidney of Wardsboro, Grandchildren; Erik, Beth, Kristie, Great-Grandchildren; Jacob, Regan, Koby and Brooklyn, his niece and nephew, Wayne Sweet and Nancy Kyle and great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Robert and Frank Balch, Marlene Lavoile and stepgrandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son Donald Giles in 2007.

A graveside service will be held in the Windham Center Cemetery at a later date to be announced.
