WALLINGFORD - Frank C. Bruce, 81, a longtime resident of Wallingford, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning October 10, 2012, while in his barn with his beloved horses and chickens.

He was born on May 18, 1931, in Benson, the son of Everett and Carlotta (Lincoln) Bruce.

Mr. Bruce enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Frank married Jane Gould in Danby on January 10, 1953.

Following his discharge he worked in the Danby Quarry for a short time prior to becoming a dairy farmer. He operated his farm until 1986, when he retired from dairy farming and started horse farming. He loved draft horses. Frank pulled draft horses, bought and sold them, and was well-known throughout the area for giving wagon rides at many places including Downtown Rutland, The Christmas Tree Barn and Hildene.

He served the Town of Wallingford for many years, on the Select Board, as Road Commissioner, Pound Keeper, Fence Viewer and on the Town of Wallingford Scholarship Board.

Frank was a longtime member and director of the Rutland County Agricultural Society (Vermont State Fair), and a member of the Eastern Draft Horse Association.

He enjoyed traveling to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Frank enjoyed buying and giving away apples.

Survivors include two daughters, Rita Reynolds and her husband Jerry, and Tracie Rabineau and her husband Steve all of Wallingford; three sons, Michael Bruce and his wife Jo of North Haverhill, N.H., Merrit Bruce and his wife Heidi of North Granville, N.Y., and Terry Bruce and his wife Michele of Wallingford; four grandchildren, Stephen and his wife J-Lynn of East Wallingford, Emily Weber and husband Chris of Ludlow, Hillary Reynolds of Pittsford, and Kimberley Reynolds of Wallingford; a great-granddaughter, Patricia Bruce; two sisters, Bonnie Bradley of Poultney and Margaret Kimball of Middlebury; a brother, Gordon "Joe" Bruce of Pawlet; seven step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren; his dog and faithful companion Minnie; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Jane Bruce on June 4, 2002, a sister Glenda Bruce, and a brother William Bruce.

Friends may call on Monday, October 15, 2012, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Wallingford-Aldous Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 16, at the funeral home. A reception will follow at the Wallingford Rescue Building, 99 Maple St., Wallingford.
