FAIR HAVEN - George E. Roberts, 86, died Monday morning April 14, 2014, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Born April 2, 1928, in Fair Haven, he was the son of the late Russell and Cora (White) Roberts.

George was a graduate of Fair Haven High School, class of 1946. After graduation he entered the United States Army and then attended the University of Vermont and earned a bachelor's degree. He was a longtime science teacher, initially at Poultney High School and later at Fair Haven Union High School.

Mr. Roberts addressed his students as "Mr." and "Mrs." And was famous for his stories about Labrador. The field trips for Earth Science in the back of the pickup truck were highly unsafe but totally memorable.

He worked on his family farm and his several slate quarries. He had the old-time way of thinking and had a conservative nature. George served the town of Fair Haven in many positions, as Selectman from 1964-76 and as a Lister from 1979 until 1987.

He is survived by his children, Hugh R. Roberts and Glen K. Roberts, both of Fair Haven, George Lee Roberts of Palm Coast, Fla., Sue E. Roberts and Kurt G. Roberts of the Chittenden County and Clint S. Roberts of Rutland; his brother, Ross Roberts of Fair Haven; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Ducharme Funeral Home Inc., 1939 Main St., Castleton.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ducharme Funeral Home, Inc.
