NORTH CLARENDON - Gerald R. McMahon, 80, of North Clarendon, died Friday evening, April 27, 2012, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.

He was born on August 17, 1931, in Rutland, the son of Richard L. and Hazel (Page) McMahon.
Mr. McMahon graduated from the Mount St. Joseph Academy in 1949.
In 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving as a radar operator on the USS Bairoko during the Korean War; following his honorable discharge in 1953, he enlisted in the Army Reserves where he served for 36 years prior to his retirement. During his service, he was a member of the National Rifle and Pistol teams traveling all over the country competing in matches. He earned the National Champion for three years and was the Vermont State Pistol Champion for seven consecutive years.
Mr. McMahon was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier in North Clarendon for 41 years, retiring in 1997.
He was a member of Christ the King Church, Proctor-Pittsford Country Club, American Legion Post #31, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #648 and the Loyal Order of the Moose #1122, and a charter member of the Clarendon Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. McMahon was an avid bowler and a member of several area leagues. He loved to play golf and earned the Club Champion and Super Senior Champion award.
He was an active member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association and served as the Vermont State president.
Mr. McMahon enjoyed attending the USS Bairoko ship reunions.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Trombley and her husband David of North Clarendon and Linda Stanowski and her husband Michael of Rutland Town; a son, Bryan McMahon of Florence; a sister, Barbara Doty and her husband Bernard of North Clarendon; a brother-in-law, Gordon Holden of Wallingford; a granddaughter, Kristina; five grandsons, Andrew, Kyle, Jarrett, Mike and Cody; a niece and two nephews.
He was predeceased his wife, Shirley Ann (Burns) McMahon, on September 8, 2008; a grandson, Gregory McMahon, on August 13, 1985; and a sister, Pat Holden, in 2009.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Church. Burial will follow in the East Clarendon Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Aldous Funeral Home.
