WELLS - Howard T. "Spike" O'Brien, 83, a recent resident of Wells, VT, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Born in Cambridge, N.Y., February 14, 1929, he was the son of the late Harry and Marion L. (Wyatt) O'Brien. Marion was later remarried to Merrill Fuller.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and had resided in Hoosick, NY, and Bennington, VT, for many years.

He married Mary G. Stetson in Bennington on June 10, 1950.

In earlier years, he operated a used car business. However, most of his life he was a truck driver, owning and operating his own business, Ro-Lin Trucking, and later working for Schanno Trucking.

He was an active member of the Moose Lodge and Bennington Elks Lodge in Bennington, VT, and the Van Rensselaer Star Lodge No. 0400, F.& A.M. of Hoosick Falls, NY.

For the past several years, he and his wife Mary have maintained a winter residence in Zephyrhills, FL, and summered at Lake Lauderdale, NY, in their motorhome.

He enjoyed NASCAR racing and was a longtime fan of Dale Earnhardt Sr. and then Dale Jr. He liked western-themed books and television shows, playing cards, hunting and sports. No matter where he was, Florida, Vermont or New York, he enjoyed getting together early for coffee with his buddies. He always made time to be with his family and friends.

He leaves his wife of 62 years, Mary S. O'Brien of Wells; son Howard "Ron" O'Brien of Williamstown, MA; daughter and son-in-law Linda and Joseph Phillips Jr. of Wells; granddaughter Tammy Holcomb and husband Rich, their children RJ and Marissa of Wells; grandson Jason Phillips and wife Shelby and their daughter Bailey of Poultney, VT; sister Helen Walsh of New Albany, Ohio, and his faithful cat of 14 years, Jeffry.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 7, at noon at the Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Park Lawn Cemetery.
