James Chase, 77, of Rutland, died June 19, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Betsy Chase and the son of Rose (Babrove) and Sidney Chudacoff, of blessed memory.

Jim was born in Appleton, Wis., on December 4, 1935. He and his sister, Nancy, enjoyed growing up together in Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin and became a stockbroker. He met the love of his life, Betsy, in Chicago on a blind date and after their marriage and birth of their daughter, moved back to Rutland, Vt., where Betsy's family resided. Jim continued his work as a stockbroker and became the office manager with Burbank Co. and then with Dean Witter Reynolds.
Jim was an avid golfer, a life master in bridge, an active birder and an amazing photographer. He loved traveling with his wife, Betsy, and visiting his children all over the globe. He enjoyed watching sports and nature shows. He had a real passion for gardening.
As an active leader in the Rutland community, he was on the board of Vermont Institute of Natural Science, the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice, and was a two-time president of the Rutland Jewish Center. He was also a member of Israel Congregation of Manchester, the Rotary Club and Center Lodge #34, F&AM.
If you asked him what he was most proud of, he would tell you his children. He was a loving and dedicated father who had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his children, Rabbi Joanie Yafa Chase and her husband, Harley Parry, Sarah Moskowitz and her husband, Andrew Moskowitz, and David Chase and his wife, Dr. Nicole Beadles; grandchildren, Shoshana, Isaac, Eli, Ariel, Emelia and Ezra; his sister, Nancy Greene and her husband, Sid Solomon; niece, Deborah Greene; nephew, Jeff Greene; brother-in-law, Sam Ravit, and sister-in-law, Gail Ravit; niece, Amy Ravit Korin; and nephew, Josh Ravit.
The funeral service will take place Sunday, June 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Israel Congregation of Manchester, Vt., with Rabbi David Novak officiating.
Burial will take place in the Rutland Jewish Cemetery in North Clarendon, Vt.
The meal of condolence will be sponsored by the Elizabeth Ravit Chase Havurah at the Chase home, where shiva will also be observed.
