BENNINGTON - Mabel M. Elwell, 88, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at her residence following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Shaftsbury, the daughter of Harold and Birdella (Bump) Harrington.
She received her education in the Shaftsbury and Bennington schools.
She married Asa Elwell at the White Chapel Church in Bennington on April 7, 1940. He died Jan. 6, 2006.
In earlier years she was employed at the Union Carbide Corporation in Bennington.
For many years she served as both the secretary and treasurer for both the Pittstown Beagle Club and the Hale Mountain Fish & Game Club. For more than 50 years, she had been active with her late husband in the operation of Elwell Beagle Sales. At the time of her death she was serving as the president of the White Chapel Society. She will be remembered in the community for her apple pies and baked beans.
She enjoyed deer hunting, her camp in Landgrove, snowmobiling, going to beagle trials, holidays and family gatherings.
Survivors include a daughter, Alice Sausville of Bennington; three granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond and Solomon Harrington.
The funeral will be held at the White Chapel Church on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Nancy Wright officiating.
Friends may call at the White Chapel on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Burial will take place in White Chapel Cemetery.
