Michael Bird Obituary

BRATTLEBORO - Michael Peter Bird, M.S., M.A., C.Phil., 52, died Saturday, April 3, 2010, at his home in Brattleboro, Vermont. He was born on May 10, 1957, the son of Robert and Barbara (Baker) Bird in New York City.

As a child, Michael lived with his family for two years in Bangalore, India, where his parents directed a program for the American Friends Service Committee and Michael attended the Bishop Cotton School. After the Birds resettled in Philadelphia, Michael attended and was graduated from Germantown Friends School, where he was a scholar athlete. He was graduated with honors from Hampshire College, and received his first master's degree, in psychopharmacology, from Boston University. After settling permanently in Vermont, Michael earned a master's degree in clinical psychology from Antioch in Keene, New Hampshire.

A licensed clinician in New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts, Michael had served as clinical director at Beech Hill Hospital, and later directed a program for young people with dual diagnoses at the Brattleboro Retreat. At the time of his death, Michael was a clinician at Servicenet Outpatient Behavioral Health Services, where he was engaged to bring cutting-edge CBT therapy to their clients. Throughout his working career, he was a champion for those mistreated and otherwise suffering from various emotional problems and addictions, a clinician helping others make the most of their lives.

A passionate outdoorsman, Vermonter, lover of nature and of life, and a lifelong learner, Michael was an accomplished photographer, a dedicated environmentalist, a hiker, canoeist and music aficionado with a particular interest in jazz. He was a talented gardener, and enjoyed both tending his own property and arranging flowers he had grown. He had expertise in automobiles, particularly with Audis, and was an amateur astronomer.

A dedicated family man, Michael P. Bird was married to Lydia S. Greene of Greenfield, Massachusetts, in 2004 in a joint Episcopalian-Quaker ceremony at Putney Friends Meeting. Michael is survived by his wife, Lydia, and their daughter, Grace E.S. Bird; his mother, Barbara B. Bird of Philadelphia, Florida and Vermont, and her life partner, Donna Anderton; his brother, Timothy Lyman Bird, his partner, Rebecca MacDonald, and their daughter, Siena Rose MacDonald Bird, of New York; his sister, Elizabeth Rebecca Bird, her spouse, Betti-Sue Hertz, and their son, Mateus Zacharia Hertz Bird, of San Francisco; his uncle, Dudley Eggleston of Marietta, Georgia, and four additional nephews. Michael had been predeceased by his father, H. Robert Bird.

A Memorial Meeting to celebrate the life of Michael Peter Bird will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Putney Friends Meeting, 17 Bellows Falls Road, Putney, Vermont, just off Route 5 North and just north of Putney Center, (802) 258-2599, www.PutneyFriends.WordPress.com for map. Burial of his cremated remains will be private at a later time, at the family home in Wallingford, Vermont.

Widely respected and loved, Michael will be missed terribly by his family, friends, colleagues and many others whose lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions in Michael Bird's memory to Spring Lake Ranch, a small residential facility in the Green Mountains providing a therapeutic community for adults with mental illness and/or substance abuse, where Mr. Bird served as a member of the board of directors: Spring Lake Ranch, 1169 Spring Lake Road, Cuttingsville, VT 05738, (802) 492-3322.

Arrangements are under the care of the Ker Westerlund Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 57 High St., Brattleboro, VT 05301.

I am deeply saddened to hear this news. I went to high school with Mike and reconnected with him when we were both living in Boston in our 20s, but it’s been years since I’ve seen him. I will cherish my memories of skiing, camping, playing ultimate, and hanging out with Mike back in the day. He had a great sense of humor and was fun to be around, but I will also remember his intellectual curiosity and his kind heart. Though we had lost touch, I am grateful for our time together during and after high school. My best wishes go out to Lydia, Grace, and the Bird family.

My deepest wishes for peace for the Bird family. When I was a teen MiKe helped me apply for and get into Hampshire College. My memory of him is one of profound kindness and generosity. His commitment to the alleviation of suffering made a deep impression on me as a young women. There aren't any good words to describe his gift to this world.

My condolences to the Bird Family
Mike was one of my most treasured role models. He was kind, had a great sense of humor and he was real. I had not talked with him recently but thought about him often. I was hiking the Long Trail in February 2010 and was in the Hartsboro Road area. I rode by the home he was living in when we were students together at Antioch and I wished he was there. We rode together to Antioch once a week for two and a half years and we were good for each other at the time. He lightened my load...and I like to think I lightened his a bit as well. He respected all and treated people with dignity. He was able to laugh at himself and found the humor in some challenging situations. His spirit lives on in my life. Peace

I just heard about Michael yesterday. We worked together at Beech Hill and have been friends for 12 years. Lydia, I am so sorry for your loss. Know that the best of him is lives on in the patients and clients that he reached out to. Many of them are better because of his work. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Grace.

Though I knew Mike for only a short time I saw something that I rarely see in the healing profession, and that is the open-mindedness and wisdom to see that sometimes what is perceived as a problem simply isn’t, and all that is required is acceptance. He was a wise healer and will be remembered for that.

I just learned of Mike's passing and am just devastated. Lydia, tried to call and leave you a message but no answer. Please know MJ and I are here for you and Grace should you need ANYTHING at all. Our love and prayers are winging out to you and to all who loved Mike and love your family. I know Mike is hanging out with Norman and Mary now, and he is smiling and at peace. I share your grief, my friend, and love you so much. Call if you wish -- 221-0465. Would be glad to have Grace with our girls here should you need any childcare...oh honey, I don't know what to say except I am so sorry.

Mike was a truly gifted counselor, and trusted friend, who helped me recover from numerous struggles and losses that fibromyalgia had brought into my life. I now feel like a whole person again. I am now hiking again, thanks to his support, encouragement, and compassion. I offer prayers of peace and strength to his family, especially his daughter Grace,
for whom his love was endless.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.
