Monelvia Fitzgerald Obituary

MIDDLETOWN SPRINGS - Mrs. Monelvia May Lewis Fitzgerald, 95, died early Saturday morning, Nov. 26, 2011, at The Pines at Rutland.

She was born in North Hebron, N.Y., on Nov. 14, 1916, the second of seven children born to Melvin and Martha (Griffith) Lewis.

Monelvia's mother had the greatest influence on her life, coming from Wales with a strong Welsh heritage and deep moral and religious values and a hardworking ethic which was instilled in Monelvia at an early age. She learned to bake for many, crochet afghans, read books and poetry and sing songs.

Monelvia married her husband, Paul, in 1935 and after nine years of marriage, they purchased a 550-acre farm in Middletown Springs. She took an active role on the farm helping with logging, haying and milking cows, while at the same time working as a clerk at a novelty store for 22 years. Together, they raised two beautiful daughters.

She began writing in 1947 by keeping a daily diary, but it wasn't until the tragic death of her daughter, Norma, in 1987 that she started turning her thoughts into poetry. She wrote her first poem in January 1988 at the age of 72.

Survivors include her daughter, Janice Blackwood and her husband William of Castleton; her five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; also numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Monelvia was predeceased by her husband, Paul Fitzgerald, in 1995; by her daughter, Norma Matthews, in 1987; by her sisters, infant sister Ruth Lewis, Foresta Montgomery, Helena Allen, Lucille Cameron and Elizabeth Nati; and by her brother, Melvin Lewis.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Mychack will officiate. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Middletown Springs First Response, P.O. Box 1033, Middletown Springs, VT 05757.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home.

Another Middletown Icon gone. Nellie and Paul were great people. I'm glad I knew Norma and here Grandkids. It is hard to remember that as I get older, so do other people get older as time goes on. I will miss her a lot/
