LUDLOW - Richard H. Briggs, 86, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Springfield Hospital, following a long illness.

He was born in Ludlow on March 29, 1925, son of Harry and Alexcina (Petelle) Briggs, was a lifelong resident of Ludlow and attended schools here. Mr. Briggs served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany.

Mr. Briggs was employed by General Electric for 34 years, retiring in 1985. He was a life member of the VFW, Ludlow American Legion and the Moose Lodge. An accomplished musician, he played piano and accordion.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ella S. (Northland) Briggs; a son, Richard E. Briggs and his wife Cheryl of North Adams, Mass.; two daughters, Sylvia J. Buswell and her husband Don of Ludlow and Sandra L. Briggs of Ludlow; his twin sister, Rachel Clark of North Springfield, Vt.; five grandchildren, Nathan Buswell and his wife Jessica of Wallingford, Vt., Justin Buswell and his wife Chandra of Cincinnati, Ohio, Brent Buswell and his wife Crista of Donegal, Pa., Keith Briggs and his wife Jessica of Winthrop, Mass., and Robin Briggs of Melbourne, Fla.; and 11 great-grandchildren, Anileah, Curtis, Megan, Chase, Brody, Kalee, Hannah, Erik, Nicholas, Skye and Ty; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Neil Briggs, and a sister, Clarinda Gilson.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, August 27, 2011, at 10 a.m. in Pleasant View Cemetery, Ludlow, with Rev. John Martens officiating. A reception at the American Legion, Post 36 Ludlow, will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Ludlow Ambulance, PO Box 911, Ludlow, VT 05149.
