SHAFTSBURY - Robert D. Agone, 97, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.

He was born Jan. 7, 1917, in Rome, N.Y., the son of Sabino and Ida (Pinti) Agone.
He graduated from Rome Free Academy, and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the State University at Albany.
He served 3½ years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended officer's training school. and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Following specialized training at Washington and Lee University, he was assigned to the Welch Convalescent Hospital in Daytona Beach, Fla., and was in charge of the U.S. Army Reconditioning Program.
He worked for 38 years in the field of education, including positions as a teacher, guidance counselor, coach and administrator. He retired in 1977, after 13 years as superintendent of schools in Johnstown, N.Y.
Following his retirement, he moved with his wife to Shaftsbury, where they became interested in horseback riding. They continued riding well into their 80s.
Survivors include three sons, David Agone of Stamford, Michael Agone of Alton, Ill. and Thomas Agone of Silverthorne, Colo.; a daughter, Kathleen Agone Nastasi of Brewerton, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Betty, in 2011.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home Saturday, .
Burial will be in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery in Shaftsbury.
