MENDON - Robert James Mickson, age 64, died of a brain aneurism Friday, May 3, 2013, at his home in Mendon, VT.

The youngest child of Gertrude and Hugo Mickson, Rob was born August 3, 1948, in Groton, MA.

He attended Townsend schools and was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Rob served in Germany, where he developed his lifelong love of Volkswagen engines, traveling and German beer.

Rob was a master mechanic who could fix or fabricate just about anything. He spent his days on the mountains of VT and NH, including Sunapee, Whaleback, Pico and Bear Creek.

Fascinated by birds, nature and astronomy, Rob hiked, fished, and camped all over North America. He often traveled in his yellow VW Vanagon, packed to the gills with spare parts and family.

Rob is survived by his older sister and brother, his nephews and niece, his 8 children and stepchildren, and 4 grandchildren.

We will remember and miss his generosity, love, sense of humor and stubborn nature.

The family will hold an open memorial celebration in midsummer (date TBA).

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the National Audubon Society, VT Fish and Wildlife, the National Park Service or your favorite nature conservation fund.
