BENNINGTON - Susan P. Steckley, 62, formerly of Pownal Center, died July 9, 2012, at her home, following a long illness.

She was born Feb. 19, 1950, in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of Eric G. and Doris (Aune) Peterson.
She received her education in Danbury, Conn., where she married Brian Steckley Dec. 27, 1969.
Mrs. Steckley worked for Sperry Division of Automation Industries in Danbury, Conn. In Bennington, she was employed a few years in retail, as a real estate broker and mortgage originator. In New York, she worked at Albany Medical Center for 10 years and at Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge. Due to disability, she retired in 2010 from the United Counseling Service Human Relations Department in Bennington.
She was active in Bennington Women's Club, Adults Interested in Monument, Mount Anthony Lioness Club, Norshaft Lions Club and UCS. She was known for providing hot meals to more than 100 people during the October 1987 snowstorm.
She enjoyed entertaining, decorating, oil painting and making jewelry.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Kristen Pierce of Leland, N.C., Renee Speir of Brunswick, N.Y., and Lisa Martinez of South Burlington; four grandsons; five nieces and five cousins.
Mrs. Steckley was predeceased by a brother, Robert Peterson, and a nephew.
There are no calling hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at a later date in Stamford, Conn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Norshaft Lions Club or VNA and Hospice at SVMC.
