POULTNEY - William H. Norton, 85, died Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Mountain View Center in Rutland.

He was born Sept. 28, 1927, the son of Leroy and Isabell (Niel) Norton, and raised in Rupert.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving on the aircraft carrier USS Boxer during World War II.

Mr. Norton was a construction worker and roofer, previously employed by Quirk Brothers Construction Co. in Rutland. He belonged to the United Union of Roofers, Water Proofers and Allied Works. In Washington State, he was a member of Pierce County Sheriff's Department and also worked for Tapps Island Security.

He was also a member of Poultney American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles of South Glens Falls, N.Y.

He enjoyed woodworking, making birdhouses and mowing his lawn.

Mr. Norton married Marjorie (Hopkins) Reed Jan. 23, 1988.

Survivors include his wife of Poultney; two daughters, Betsey Ingleston and Bonnie Bishop of Poultney; two stepchildren, Donna Sorenson of Edmonds, Wash., and Jim Shipton of Arvade, Colo.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in Rupert Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Poultney American Legion or South Glens Falls Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home.
