BENNINGTON - Rodney W. Hoard Sr., 93, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. One of 12 children born to Frank A. and Mercy (Colby) Hoard, he was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Winhall.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and recipient of the Purple Heart.
Mr. Hoard had been an auto mechanic for many years, working at Thurber's Garage, Walter L. Barber, Paulins and Art Ward's Garage. In later years, He worked for Stanley Tools, retiring after 10 years.
He enjoyed automobiles, working around his home, gardening and hunting.
His wife, Lillian (Young) Hoard, predeceased him in April 1991.
He is survived by his sons Edwin F. Hoard of Iva, S.C., Rodney W. Hoard Jr. and wife Patricia of Bennington, Claude M. Hoard and wife Janet of Shaftsbury, Thomas J. Hoard and wife Donna of Bennington; nine grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Alan Hoard, on Nov. 6, 2011, two grandsons; his five brothers; and six sisters.
Graveside services with military honors will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.
