He was born on April 11,1930, in Rutland, Vermont, the son of the late Harold and Irene (Fitzgerald) Brothers. He was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph High School. He graduated from Northeastern University with a BS degree in accounting.

Robert worked as the assistant executive director and administrative director of the New York State Teacher's Retirement System, retiring in 1992 after 21 years of service as a key member in helping the NYSTRS develop a superior data processing operation, resulting in improved and timelier services.

Robert was a hard worker throughout his life with his greatest achievement being his family. He loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren at his summer lake house in Bomoseen. He spent the winters in South Padre Island, where he enjoyed socializing with his friends and neighbors.

He enjoyed working on his houses, traveling, fishing and playing golf. He was a member of the Rutland Country Club and the South Padre Country Club.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Sally Brothers; his sister Pamela Brothers Jakeway; and his grandson Matthew.

Survivors include his children, Michael (Ann) Brothers, Timothy (Laura) Brothers, Andrew Brothers, Mary Ann (Robert) Ida and Susan (Ken) Banker; his grandchildren, Joseph, Katherine, Ryan, Mackenzie and Sophia; his brother, Charles E. Brothers of Rutland; and several nieces and nephews.
