Maurice Matteson Obituary

BENNINGTON - Maurice W. Matteson, 80, died Jan. 13, 2012, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

He was born in Sunderland, March 7, 1931, the son of Joseph and Mabel (Atwood) Matteson.

He graduated from Arlington High School.

Mr. Matteson served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, including in Japan, Korea, Germany and Fort Knox.

As a teenager, he worked at Roaring Branch Camps in Sunderland. He was later employed as a farmer and supervisor for Dairy Herds Improvement Association. He worked for Agway for many years, was a Kirby Vacuum Cleaner salesman and retired as night auditor for Equinox Hotel in Manchester.

He was a member of Metowee Valley Grange and American Legion Post 69 in Arlington and past master of Battenkill Grange.

Mr. Matteson enjoyed hunting, fishing and Western movies.

Survivors include four children, Theodore Matteson of Indian Harbor, Fla., M. Jacob Matteson of Manatomoras, Pa., Sandrya Matteson of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and Deborah Whitman of Arlington; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased in 2011 by both his wife, the former Shirley Decker, whom he married Jan. 2, 1954, and a son, Steven Matteson.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home Arlington Chapel. Burial will follow in Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland. There are no calling hours.

My heart goes out to the kids, I remember Maurice, 'Shirley and the kids when they lived in Middletown, everyone was just great. He served his country well and now rest in the Ultimate Place, not made by mans hands.
