BENNINGTON - John Junior Gassaway, 69, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at his home following a long illness.

He was born Oct. 16, 1943, in Steubenville, Ohio, the son of John Martin Gassaway and Goldie Moore.

He grew up in Burton, W.Va., and served in the U.S. Navy for four years. John moved to the Bennington area in 1962 and married his first wife, Judy Gauthier, in 1964. He married the former Maureen Crane in June of 1984.

He was employed at Stanley Tools in Shaftsbury, until its closing, and later at Davey Oil in Bennington, from which he retired in 2005. He was a member of the Murray Hollow Hunting Club and American Legion Post 13.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen Gassaway of Bennington; his children, Jay M. Gassaway and Luke Gassaway, both of Bennington, and Shawn F. Gassaway of North Bennington; stepsons Robert, Matthew and Seth Normyle; a brother, James Gassaway of Rockford, Ill.; six grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Per his request, there will be no calling hours. There will be a memorial reception at the American Legion on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 4 p.m.
