CLARENDON - Virginia Gladys Barker, 87, died unexpectedly Thursday, February 7, 2013, at her residence.

She was born on May 27, 1925, in Chester, the daughter of Walter and Edna (Shattuck) West.

She met Francis G. Barker at a dance at Lowell Lake in Londonderry, Vermont, on September 9, 1945. Their first dance was to "It Was Just a Neighborhood Dance" and on November 9, 1946, they were married in Whitehall, New York.

On April 4, 1984, Frank and Virginia together took Jesus as their Lord and Savior and together were baptized at the East Wallingford Baptist Church by the Reverend Edgar Cougar of Homestead Baptist Church. They had been attending Calvary Bible Church since 1986.

Mrs. Barker had been employed in her early years by Vermont Optical in Brattleboro. In August of 1950, she and her husband purchased a dairy farm on the East Road in Clarendon. They operated the farm together for 36 years prior to their retirement. During their retirement, she helped her husband produce maple syrup and was well-known in the area as being the "Syrup Lady."

She enjoyed word search puzzles, bingo and loved spending time with her husband camping, square dancing, four-wheeling, snowmobiling and berry and apple picking.

Mrs. Barker enjoyed helping her daughter, Wanda, deliver flowers on all the holidays for Park Place Florist.

She loved George Strait music.

Survivors include four daughters, Marlene MacMurray and her husband Bob of Clarendon, Judith Hulsebus and her husband Jim of Rutland Town, Donna Stearns and her husband David of Center Rutland, and Wanda Woods and her husband Glen of Castleton; nine grandchildren, Shawn, Sara, Jennifer, Jason, Janelle, Becky, Melissa, Robert and Kendra; 11 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Samantha, Brittany, Austin, Erika, Jacob, Hunter, Cassidy, Hannah, Aliva and Brayton; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Francis G. Barker, on November 1, 2004; also by two sisters, Susie Cole and Myra Little; and five brothers, Lewis West, Malcolm West, Harlan West, Ellsworth West and Gilbert West.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 15, 2013, at the Calvary Bible Church, 2 Meadow Lane, Rutland, VT 05701. Burial will be at a later date in the East Clarendon Cemetery on Airport Road in East Clarendon, Vt.

Friends may call on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home, 44 North Main St., Rutland, Vt.
