Hsi Chen Obituary

RUTLAND TOWN - Hsi Sheng Yue Chen, MD, died peacefully at The Meadows in Rutland Town, VT, on August 10, 2013.

She was born October 18, 1914, in Putian, China.

She received her MD and practiced briefly in Shanghai, China, before completing an M.S. in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan in 1947. She worked in hospitals in Minneapolis, then moved to New York City with her husband in 1949. Dr. Chen worked as an anesthesiologist for many years, primarily at the New York Infirmary. She then served as Staff Physician for the Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged, from 1976 through the mid-1980s. She ended her career working part-time as the Staff Physician for the largest women's homeless shelter in New York City.

Dr. Chen was predeceased by her husband, Yu Ching Chen, and by her four brothers and a sister. She is survived by her loving family: daughter Patricia Chen (Charlie Delos) and their children Robin (Angel Hernandez), Daniel, Michael, Nicholas, and Marcy, and son Harry (Anne Lezak) and their children Adrian, Alyssa, and Laurel, and by her beloved great-granddaughter, Diosa Hernandez-Delos.

When her husband died, Dr. Chen moved to Vermont from Queens, NY, to be with her son and his family. She adapted well to a more rural lifestyle, walking the family dog, becoming a regular at the Godnick Senior Center and a favorite of her grandchildrens' friends, all of whom called her "Paw Paw," Chinese for "grandmother." She spent her final years at the Gables and the Meadows, where she developed a close connection to the caring staff. She will long be remembered for her strong spirit, professional success, and generosity to family and friends.

Memorial Service to be held at Grace Congregational Church, Rutland, VT, on Friday, August 23, at 11 a.m.

Arrangements are in the care of Clifford Funeral Home.
