BENNINGTON - John "Jack" P. Griffin Jr., 69, died April 10, 2014, at Albany Medical Center.

He was born May 11, 1944, in Albany, N.Y., the son of Anna Cone and John P. Griffin Sr.

He was a 1962 graduate of Bennington Catholic High School, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business from Boston College in 1966.

He was a member of the ROTC, and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marines Corps in 1965.

He married Carol Farrington on June 10, 1967.

He owned and operated Griffin's Furniture Stores in Arlington and Brattleboro until 1981. He then founded John P. Griffin Real Estate, and was involved in property development, property management, as well as commercial and home sales.

He was a member of the Bennington Planning Commission, served on the Bennington Housing Authority Board, and also served on the Governor's Economic Advisory Board during Gov. Howard Dean's administration.

He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart St. Francis, where he served in earlier years as an altar boy and as a parish council member.

He was also a longtime member of the Bennington Elks Club.

He was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, and children, Michael V. Griffin, John P. Griffin III and Eric L. Griffin; two grandchildren; a sister, Margaret "Peg" Pare; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters, Eileen Smith, Anne Peck, Joan Allen and Helen Faryniarz.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Mahar & Son Funeral Home with a prayer, and at 11 a.m. from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home Monday,

Private committal services will take place in St. John's Cemetery in North Bennington, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church or Second Chance Animal Shelter, through the office of Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
