John was a very dear and special man who valued the wisdom that can be shared through education. He was a life-long student, a kind teacher and man who prized friendships developed in the course of reading each other's writings. I met him as his legal counsel. We became friends and it was John with whom I first shared my poetry and whose opinion I greatly valued on that and many other topics.

Like many of you, I will think of him often and always with gratitude for his generosity of spirit.

God bless you John for all the good that you did and all that you inspired.

John was the quintessential teacher and friend to students and faculty. In that capacity, he inspired and enabled learning and collaboration among his students and colleagues. He was my favorite professor of all, and I shall be forever indebted to him for the gift of education in the humanities he bestowed on me. Learning with Professor Bremer never ended with the walls of the classroom; it spilled into a student/teacher relationship. He inspired with a twinkle of the eye, a kind smile of recognition and a heart without bounds.

My sincere condolences to the many people whose lives were touched by John. I worked with him the last few years, formatting his pages for publication and helping him with use of his computers. He spoke about this work and especially his recent understanding of Plato's Meno, often linking it with his understanding of learning. He was very kind to me always offering me tea, engaging me in deep conversations, telling me stories of people he had known, and expressing gratitude for any work that I did for him. I will miss him.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of John Bremer. I met for two weeks in the UCC, Cork, Ireland some years ago, and since then our relationship was of friendship and cooperation. He was a great scholar and, above all, a great person. So sorry he died. Sit tibi terra levis.

I wrote to John after reading his Plato's Ion: Philosophy as Performance and discovering his appendix about his personal experience with an oral culture: morris dancing, and we met soon after in 2008. He was a great friend and mentor to me, both in my work on Plato and in my nearly lifelong love of morris dancing. He came to Marlboro to see me dance with the BF Harridans and a year ago came to Binghamton, NY for the Binghamton Morris Men and Harridan's Harvest Home. He shared such great stories about his dancing. My students at Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL learned from his unpublished work on the Meno. He was something like a surrogate father to me, and I'll miss him very much.

To John's family and friends, John was one of a kind, an amazing person who could motivate you to do just about anything. His concept of education, honed with the deep knowledge going from Plato to Dewey and beyond as well as from his own experience, changed the lives of hundreds if not thousands directly, plus many more indirectly through those he himself taught. He was an educational giant and it was a privilege to know him for more than forty five years. I am also grateful that he introduced me to Vic and Meg Atkins who have been my dear friends now for almost as long as I knew John.

Dear Anne and children,
I am sorry to hear of the passing of your father and grandfather.
