Winifred G. McClallen, 96, of Rutland, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, in Rutland.
She was born in New Bedford, MA, Nov. 2, 1920, the daughter of Louis and Alma (Foisy) Guba.
Winifred was a graduate of New Bedford High School and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. At college, she met Charles E. McClallen, of Rutland, and they were married on Aug. 30, 1942.
After graduating, they settled in Rutland. In 1959, they moved to Wallingford and opened McClallen's Pharmacy which Winifred ran until 1971 when they moved back to Rutland. She worked as a pharmacist at many local pharmacies, including Park Pharmacy and Wilcox Pharmacy. After retiring, she spent many years volunteering at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Winifred was a member of Christ the King Church. She served on the Rutland City School Board from 1975 to 1983.
She enjoyed gardening, trips to the seacoast in Maine and was an avid reader. She was a devoted mother to her children and grandchildren. Her home was always open to her children's friends with at least one whom she called "my sixth son."
Surviving are five sons, Charles "Mac" McClallen and his wife, Debbie, of New Hartford, NY, Martin "Muckenschnabel" McClallen, of Mendon, John McClallen and his wife, Kate, of Wallingford, Stephen McClallen and his wife, Julia, of Milford, NH, and Joseph McClallen and his wife, Debby, of Williamsburg, VA; one daughter, Joan Skelly and her husband, Ian, of Waterbury; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles; an infant daughter, Donna; a sister, Constance Bonneau; a brother, Louis Guba; and by a grandson, Kevin McClallen.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at Christ the King Church in Rutland.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
