James FARLEY Obituary

FARLEY, James O., M.D.
Died March 5, 2012

Jim was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 18, 1925 to Sylvia Murray and William John Farley. The family then moved about 60 miles north of Detroit to Davison, MI where his parents owned a restaurant and ice cream plant. Jim went to school and graduated from Davison High School in 1942. In the fall of 1942, he enrolled in Albion College as a pre-med student. It was during the war so Jim joined the Navy V-12 Program. At the end of his first year, he was sent to Tufts College in Massachusetts and later to Midshipman's School in Chicago. He received his Naval Commission in January 1945 and was transferred to the Philippines to take command of the LCT.

After the war ended Jim returned to Albion College where he met his bride to be, Marlyn A. Barnett. After finishing college, he enrolled and went to Wayne University School of Medicine. Jim completed his studies in June of 1952. Jim and Marlyn were married that same month and travelled to Sacramento, California where Jim completed his internship/residency program at the Sacramento County Hospital. While there he met and formed a partnership with William L. Hedges, M.D. They practiced together for 22 years. Jim then joined the Kaiser organization. When Jim joined Kaiser in 1977 he was appointed Chief of Family Practice. Jim retired from Kaiser in 1989. While in practice Jim was quite active in medical politics and served on numerous committees and was honored being elected president in 1969. Jim is survived by his wife Marlyn, their four sons - James T. Farley, Thomas G. Farley, William C. Farley and David S. Farley; two daughters-in-law - Nanette S. Farley & Shannon R. Farley; and two granddaughters - Lauren E. Farley and Catherine H. Farley.

Dr. Farley and Dr. Hedges were our Doctor's from childhood and I will always have found memories of his kindness. From the old fashion "House Calls" to emergency stitches, they were just wonderful Doctors. My sympathies to the Farley family, he was such a kind and wonderful man.

Our condolences to the Farley family for their loss. He served the medical community with his professional skills and compassion. Jim was the consummate example of the qualities that a physician possesses. He has been an inspiation to me as what we should strive for not only professionally but personally bringing love to his family and support to his colleagues. Jim was the sparkplug for informing his retired Kaiser colleagues of the activities that kept us all feeling young and "in the loop." Vassie and I are saddened by his passing.

Dear Mrs. Farley and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Farley's passing! Such a decent, kind man.
He was our Family Doctor (along with Dr. Hedges) from the time I was a toddler until he left his practice when I was 17. He took out my tonsils and did an emergency appendectomy on me--I'm probably still here because of him! I saw him for many other childhood mishaps and ailments. It was always very comforting to see him when I was sick or hurt. My Mom and Dad credited Dr. Farley's advice in saving their sanity during some stressful times. (They were self-employed, and our family business was across the street from his office)
Thank you, Dr. Farley for taking great care of us.
I wish I had a doctor like him now--I will never forget him!

God Bless,
