Eugene Okada Obituary

Born April 3, 1919 in Sacramento, CA, the son of Jiro and Kichi Okada. Eugene peacefully entered into his final resting place on September 21, 2012 at his home. Eugene leaves his loving elder sister Agnes Kojima of Hyogo Ken, Japan, his nephew Yukio Kojima, his grand-nieces Akiko & Keiko Kojima, as well as many other relatives in Japan. Eugene was labeled in 1968 by the Sacramento Union as "MR. BOWLING" since he was the most important man in Sacramento bowling. Eugene began bowling in 1939 and his love of the game grew ever since. He served as President of the Sacto Bowling Assn and the Nisei Bowling Assn; Organizer of the N. Cal. Nisei Bowling Federation; officer of the South Bowl and Land Park Nisei Leagues. Eugene also served as a Board Member of the Sacramento Buddhist Church and President of the Senator Lions Club. He was also the last surviving 1954 Charter member of the Senator Lions Club. Eugene worked 10 hours a day, 6 days a week at his oriental gift shop called the YOROZU which was originally established in Sacramento over 95 years ago. Eugene will be sorely missed and he leaves behind many fun and lasting memories for all of us. A memorial service will be held to honor Eugene at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, October 8, 2012 at the Sacramento Buddhist Church located at 2401 Riverside Blvd., Sacramento, CA.

On behalf of myself and my wife Ellen, I would like to offer my condolences to the friends and family of Eugene. Through our participation in the Nisei Bowling Leagues, we had the honor of knowing Eugene and the privilege of working with him as officers of the Sacramento Nisei Bowling Association. During our years of participation, Eugene set a true example for the ongoing leadership of the SNBA through his selfless commitment to the operation of the Nisei Mixed Fours League. Well beyond his years of participation, Eugene remained active as the League Secretary and came out each week to serve in this role. He clearly demonstrated his dedication to the sport and to our organization, and made what must have been a challenging effort to remain active and in touch with his many friends in the league and association. Above and beyond the example that he set as a member and leader of the SNBA, Eugene set an example that we can all follow in leading an active and healthy life, despite the physical constraints that come as a natural part of life. Thanks also go to his many friends who assisted him by providing their personal care over many years.

Eugene will be sorely missed. A kindred spirit who was always very helpful whenever I visited the Yorozu to purchase a gift. I enjoyed watching him wrap gifts without ever using tape. He encouraged me to attend the Sacramento Buddhist Church Bazaaar which I did with enthusiasm.
