Schoening, William "Bill"
SCHOENING, William "Bill" Howard Bill was 89 years when he passed on November 17, 2014. He was born July 12, 1925 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and attended the University of Iowa. He met his wife Shirley Sikkema on a blind date and they were married six months later in January 1951. Bill and Shirley came to Sacramento in 1952, living in the Fruitridge and College Greens areas. In 1972 they moved to Carmichael where they owned an acre and grew many daffodils, irises, tulips, as well as fruit trees and vegetable gardens. Bill was an accountant, and he and Shirley were owners of several businesses throughout their marriage. Shirley passed in 2001 and Bill took up his love of ragtime, Dixieland and traditional jazz music by hosting piano parties and inviting players from the Sacramento and Bay areas to play. Eventually, he started a Wednesday night music session at the Straw Hat Pizza Parlor on Mather Field Road, which is still going strong. Word of these sessions spread and he had players from throughout the country call and ask if they could stop by and play on the way to another west coast booking. He was active in the Sacramento Ragtime Society and the American Society of Dowsers. Bill is survived by five children-Vangie (Russ), Kevin (Sherri), David, Garon, and Mary (Kevin), and six grandchildren-Deja, Paige, Taylor, Evan, Molly, and Max and one great grand- son-- Hudson. Remembrances can be made to the Sacramento Ragtime Society as Bill felt it was very important to keep the music alive in today's culture. Funeral services were private.
