Florence Dong

1928 - 2016

Florence Dong, fondly known as Flo, Auntie Flo, or "Thommie", passed away peacefully February 1, 2016 at Applewood Care Center in Sacramento, CA. Born August 30, 1928 in Akron, OH, she was one of six children. Her parents were Edward and Edith Dong. When Flo was six years old, her family drove from Ohio to Vancouver, Canada to visit her mother's relatives and birthplace in Victoria. She and her family spent the next ten years in Gilbert, AZ, where they had extended family. After Flo's father passed, she, her mother and siblings moved to Sacramento, where Flo spent her adult years with her loving mother and devoted sisters. Always happy and with a smile on her face, Flo loved playing with her many nephews and nieces. She could carry a tune as she knitted, crocheted, and played solitaire. She also enjoyed her daily TV "soaps" and the annual trip with her sisters and family to play slot machines. Flo had a special knack for numbers, always remembering everyone's birthdays. She was a perfectionist at dishwashing and loved food -- especially her warm butter-horn pastries. Flo is preceded in death by her father and mother; brother and sister in law, Warren and Lily Dong; brother, Herbert Dong; and brothers-in-law, Joseph Gong, Marvin Mar, and Theodore Leung. She is survived by her sisters, Ruth Leung, Marie Mar, Helen Gong; and sister-in-law, Irene Dong. Surviving nephews include Bruce Dong (Huey), Jeffrey (Mei) Leung, David (Misako) Mar, Mark (Jane) Dong, Bradley Gong, Gordon (Kim) Dong. Surviving nieces are Karen (David) Jordan, Marilyn (Dennis) Gee, and Stacey (Leland) Crawford. In addition to numerous grandnephews and grandnieces, family and loved ones also include Tedmond Leung, Kathy (Joe) Vale, Tim (Jennifer) Dong, Leland Knisley, and Annie Miranda. The family wishes to thank Flo's caregivers at Sunrise Guest Home, Camelot Care Homes, Sutter Hospice, and Applewood Care Center for their compassionate care, love and support. Private family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sutter Hospice.
